IIDA is pleased to announce the Best of Competition winners for two international design competitions, the 2023 Best of Asia Pacific Design Awards and the 2023 Global Excellence Awards. The 2023 Best of Asia Pacific Design Awards Best of Competition winner is CCD/Cheng Chung Design (HK) Ltd. for MUMIAN Chengdu in Chengdu, China, and the 2023 Global Excellence Awards Best of Competition winner is Light and Shadow Design for Shanghai Donggang·Chengfu Homestay in Shanghai, China.
“Showcasing these remarkable design teams, nominated for different awards in the same categories, is truly a future-facing beacon for design around the world,” said IIDA Executive Vice President and CEO, Cheryl S. Durst, Hon. FIIDA. “Hospitality projects continue to grow and are all-encompassing. Hospitality designers must envelop the guest in a total experience that is simultaneously inventive, exceptional, relaxing, and memorable.”
The Best of Asia Pacific Awards winners, including the Best of Competition, were chosen by a jury of design professionals including Lamar Johnson Collaborative Senior Interior Designer, Jade Li, IIDA; IIDA South Florida Chapter President and Gresham Smith Interior Designer, Midori Shim, IIDA; and Atelier Cho Thompson Co-Founder and Principal, Ming Thompson, IIDA, AIA.
“The layering of culturally rich textiles mixed with the modern yet warm furniture plan seamlessly weaves together a spectacular experience,” said Thompson on behalf of the jury. “This design team thought out every detail resulting in a story that gives guests something unique in every space.”
The Global Excellence Award winners, including Best of Competition, were chosen by a jury of design professionals including ALA Founder and Principal, Alda Ly; Studio BV Founder and CEO, Betsy Vohs, Associate AIA; and Flad Architects Interior Designer, Sara Wolf, IIDA.
“The jury kept coming back to descriptors like respite, creative, timeless, and peaceful,” said Vohs on behalf of the jury. “Simultaneously understated and grand, the project makes the most of the hotel’s spaces both large and small.”
The Best of Competition winners were announced and honored at a special celebration on February 17, 2024 at the L’Atelier des Abbesses in Paris and can be viewed on IIDA.org (on pages for the Best of Asia Pacific Design Awards and Global Excellence Awards, respectively).
