Design Coalition’s Annual Gala Honored NYSID Dean, Dr. Ellen Fisher along with New and Continuing Certified Interior Designers
This past Wednesday, the New York design community gathered at the Intrepid Sea, Air and Space Museum for IDLNY’s third annual An Evening at the Intrepid. The industry coalition, dedicated to advancing, promoting, and monitoring the right to practice interior design in the state of New York, hosted over 200 designers and advocates at the aircraft carrier museum for a night of celebration and community. The coalition was pleased to announce that over the last three years, there has been an increase in the number of CIDs, with over 500 designers registered to date. A fundamental element to IDLNY’s mission, education was a fitting theme for the evening.
Dr. Ellen Fisher of NYSID (CID FASID IIDA) presented the keynote address. Serving as Vice President for Academic Affairs and Dean of the College for NYSID, Dr. Fisher has a wealth of experience in the industry. She recognizes how her education has given her the opportunity to take on a wide variety of projects: “From the very start of my student time at FIT, I always took for granted that I wanted and needed to meet the mark of professionalism, by taking the NCIDQ exam and then applying to be a Certified Interior Designer.” Alluding to the value of legal recognition and regulation for any profession, Fisher closed her remarks by toasting those who have achieved certification and encouraging emerging designers and those active in the practice to get involved: “Support IDLNY at events such as this, take the NCIDQ exam as soon as you can, become a Certified or Licensed Interior Designer, and fight for the right to practice and protect the title conferred by education, experience and examination.”
Preceding the keynote address, IDLNY’s President, Dan Villella, and President-Elect and NYSID faculty member Ethan Lu provided remarks. Both incoming and outgoing presidents expressed that the organization will continue to focus on certification, offering educational workshops and other valuable opportunities for both emerging and seasoned designers.

IDLNY acts as a spokes-group for interior designers to the New York State legislature and is run by volunteers from across the industry. The coalition is comprised of ASID National, ASID NY Metro, ASID NY Upstate and Canada East, IIDA National, IIDA NY, and The Decorators Club who were in attendance for the evening’s festivities.
