Hacin + Associates, a Boston-based interdisciplinary architecture and design studio formed in 1993, is marking its thirtieth anniversary with the announcement of new leadership and promotions across the company. Over the past three decades, the firm’s founder, David Hacin, FAIA, has worked to curate a team that encourages individuals to work as the best version of themselves, and as the firm evolves, leaders whose talents represent a broad spectrum of the architecture and design disciplines, will step forward. Marking this transition, the firm will be unveiling a refreshed brand identity that reflects the evolution and growth required as it moves into this new chapter.

Scott Thomson, AIA, David Tabenken, AIA, LEED AP, Matthew Manke, Jennifer Clapp, and Rob Clocker, AIA, LEED AP (current Senior Associates) are being named as new principals, joining David Hacin as Founding Principal and Creative Director of the firm. With a combined total of more than 90 years spent with Hacin + Associates, their promotions mark the transition of the company from a sole proprietorship to shared ownership. Scott Thomson, David Tabenken, Matthew Manke, and Rob Clocker practice under the firm’s architecture division, with Rob Clocker leading as Managing Principal, while Jennifer Clapp will continue to lead the firm’s interior design practice. Additionally, team members Jeffrey Brown, AIA, Matthew Arnold, AIA, Eduardo Serrate, AIA, and Darien Fortier are being promoted to Senior Associates.

With the addition of new principals, the firm will move to the standalone moniker of Hacin. Stepping away from the identity of Hacin + Associates, the name Hacin supports the wide range of existing disciplines and evolving opportunities for the organization going forward. The refreshed brand identity was executed by the firm’s in-house design team and the new logo, and branding will be implemented in upcoming communications to reflect the growth and excitement around these internal changes. With changes in leadership structure and an evolution of the brand, Hacin is redefining the plus, which was originally a nod to David Hacin’s Swiss heritage, to act as a symbol of the comprehensive nature of the firm’s work and how its team collaborates.

Over the years, Hacin has had a history of non-traditional growth and questioning the dominant paradigm around how the architecture and design industries typically operate. With a wide portfolio of work ranging from residential, commercial, hospitality, preservation (and more), the firm specializes in not specializing. Interdisciplinary in nature and housing the practices of architecture, interior design, and visual identity under one roof, Hacin will continue to exemplify excellence within the disciplines and typologies they engage in. The firm’s motto of “we all add something” will remain a key pillar in their ethos, especially during this important time. The growth of Hacin is not only measured by leadership and size; in recent years, the team’s project locations have expanded outwards from Boston, the range of their work has diversified, and the breadth of their academic backgrounds has increased, with the firm now representing time spent at fifty-three institutions across sixteen countries and fifteen states.

“Moving forward into our thirtieth year of practice, I’m certain the new Hacin will be a diverse, interdisciplinary, and multigenerational team that builds on the talents and strengths that we have assembled together,” says David Hacin, Founding Principal and Creative Director. “While remaining fully engaged and committed to personally supporting and encouraging Hacin for many years ahead, I am thrilled to see Scott, David, Matthew, Jennifer, and Rob step into their new roles as Principals. After working with them for a very long time, I already know without a doubt that the next chapter of Hacin is in exceptional hands. As we enter into a new phase of our firm’s evolution, I’m eager to watch this remarkable senior leadership group – together with the rest of our company – build a dynamic future together.”
