HDR’s architecture company is pleased to announce that H. Michael Smith, AIA, LEED AP, has joined the firm as a director for HDR’s Education | Science | Tech (EST) program in the South region.

An architect with over three decades of experience, Michael has devoted his entire career to designing facilities that advance some of society’s most ambitious and important research goals in the academic, science, and technology sectors. Holding senior leadership positions at some of the nation’s largest architectural firms, he has led and managed many notable projects. These projects have included academic and biomedical teaching and research laboratories, biotechnology and pharmaceutical research and production facilities, cleanrooms for the manufacture of microelectronics and medical devices, and animal research facilities.

“I’m thrilled that Mike has joined HDR,” stated Steve Riojas, director of the EST program. “He is an active practitioner in the education, science, and technology sectors, bringing hands-on knowledge, experience, and creative thinking throughout the entire project spectrum to our clients.”

Michael will lead the EST program in Charlotte, Atlanta, Tampa, Dallas, and Houston, and will develop and nurture strong relationships with clients and institutions across the academic, science, and technology sectors.

“HDR has a remarkable science and technology portfolio and a breadth and depth of expertise that is unrivaled in the industry,” shared Michael. “I’m looking forward to working alongside the firm’s many talented experts to bolster the EST program even further.”

Committed to understanding and addressing his clients’ most pressing challenges, Michael is actively engaged with the science and technology community, including regularly participating in and contributing to industry and trade events and publications. In 2013, he joined the board of directors for the Los Angeles Biomedical Research Institute at Harbor UCLA Medical Center in Torrance, California, and helped advance its mission for developing innovative solutions for healthcare through biomedical discovery.
