Gunlocke’s Calia™ Guest Chair by Brad Ascalon Officially Launches

A novel approach to seating, and yet familiar. Calia™ easily blends aesthetically from conservative to contemporary.

Grabbing the attention of the editors at Contract magazine was Brad Ascalon’s first creation with Gunlocke: the Calia guest chair. Calia received the Editor’s Choice Award during the Best of NeoCon Awards celebration in 2017. Gunlocke is pleased to announce that orders for Calia will be accepted April 16th.

Aesthetically, Calia manages to bridge the gap between the brand’s classic wood furniture and the ever-increasing modern typologies that continue to emerge from the company.

“When the project began, the design was intended to be much more modern,” Ascalon said. “Through our process of integrating a stronger brand identity into the work, everyone involved, myself included, realized that we could pull back a bit, somewhat blur the classic and modern boundaries, while still offering the market something beautiful and new.”

The inspiration behind Calia was the heritage of the Gunlocke brand itself. The goal was to merge frame and upholstery into a singular form that simultaneously speaks to the brand’s more than century old history of wood craftsmanship and the brand’s continuing evolution. As a visual cue, the angle of the back legs is purposely severe to suggest a dynamic movement and shift of the brand. While the back of the frame utilizes the old-world technology of steam bending, emphasizing beautiful grain detailing and adding strength to the overall construction.
