Booking Holdings, Bucharest selected as a winner in the Excellent Architecture – Interior Architecture category and NBA Store, Berlin receives a special mention in the Excellent Architecture – Retail Architecture category.

Gensler announces that two of its projects have been recognised in the German Design Awards 2024. Booking Holdings Bucharest has been selected as a winner in the Excellent Architecture – Interior Architecture category in recognition of outstanding and exemplary design achievements. The NBA Store Berlin has received a special mention in the Excellent Architecture – Retail Architecture category, awarded for remarkable design achievements.

Lukasz Platkowski, Managing Director, Gensler Berlin said: “We are delighted that the design collaboration with Booking Holdings, Bucharest and the NBA Store, Berlin have been recognised for excellence in architecture for interiors and retail at the German Design Awards 2024. We are proud to have partnered with these organisations to imagine innovative office and retail spaces which meet business needs and provide a space for community connection. These projects are a testament to Gensler’s ongoing mission to create forward-thinking spaces which positively impact where we live, work and play.”

Booking Holdings, the world’s leading provider of online travel and related services, appointed Gensler to design its first ‘Centre of Excellence’ in Bucharest, Romania. The space was designed with Booking Holdings’ specialised and highly skilled talent in mind, with the aim of fostering collaboration opportunities across its brands such as Booking.com, Priceline, Agoda, Rentalcars.com, KAYAK and OpenTable.

The office concept designed by Gensler features dedicated areas that are reminiscent of global continents including North America, South America, Asia, Europe, the Middle East, and Australia, with the entrance and reception being heavily influenced by Romanian design. The space is conceptualised for occupants and visitors to start in Romania and travel the world as they move through the office. Each area’s distinct regional identity is mirrored in the use of colours, patterns and textures in carpets, tiling, furniture and furnishings, artwork, and planting.

Gensler was appointed by Fanatics and Lids to design the NBA’s (National Basketball Association) largest retail store in Europe. The flagship store is situated within the newly renovated The Playce at Potsdamer Platz at the heart of Berlin’s dynamic community. The design was focused on creating a vibrant and interactive space for fans in Germany to connect and engage with the sport and each other.

The design for the store resulted in a multi-purpose retail experience set within an authentic NBA environment. Several interactive functionalities were incorporated into the design for visitors including digital screens to compare their height with NBA players past and present; an NBA 2K gaming lounge; and a large multi-media screen showing NBA highlights and content around the clock. The Gensler design team also fitted NBA regulation size basketball court markings to the floor design, complete with LED basketball hoops to add an element of playfulness to the in-store experience.

The German Design Awards are the German Design Council’s largest awards competition. They set international standards for innovative design developments on the global market. For more information, visit german-design-award.com.
