E Ink ‘DAZZLE’ Project Receives SEGD Global Design Merit Award

E Ink’s DAZZLE project at the San Diego International Airport

E Ink’s Dynamic Film for Architecture Honored for Experiential Graphic Design Impact

E Ink, the technology brand implementing revolutionary ePaper tiles to the architecture and design market, has been awarded the prestigious SEGD Global Design Merit Award in the Strategy, Research & Planning category for its integral involvement in DAZZLE at the San Diego International Airport. The award program honors design work that connects people to place by providing direction, content and compelling experiences in public spaces. E Ink’s bi-stable ink technology inspired artist collective Ueberall International to do just that using solar-powered, autonomous ePaper tiles to create a monumental dynamic display on the facade of the San Diego International Airport’s Rental Car Center. Evaluated by a multidisciplinary jury including Brian Brindisi (Gensler), Christina Lyons (Fashion Institute of Technology), and Jeff Grantz (RISD/Materials & Methods), DAZZLE was chosen based on effectiveness in connecting people to place, its ability to create a unique and memorable user experience, and for solving the client’s objectives and design challenges.

“A technically groundbreaking project that started with more obstacles than opportunities transformed an immense facade into a dynamic solar-powered canvas of wirelessly transmitted low-resolution patterns….using electrified ink,” commented one of the jury members.

Created in collaboration with Ueberall International, DAZZLE is a site-specific artwork at the San Diego International Airport featuring the first large scale architectural application of E Ink’s revolutionary Prism technology. The project was inspired by Norman Wilkinson’s “razzle dazzle” camouflage used in WWI in the waters of San Diego to alter the perception of ships to the enemy. The public art commission is installed on the facade of the airport’s new Rental Car Center and features dynamic animations displayed on 2,000+ solar powered ePaper tiles that display custom, dynamic animations across the exterior of the building. The project has transformed the 1,600-foot long facade into an interactive landmark mural to be viewed daily by hundreds of thousands of airport visitors, motorists on the Interstate 5 Freeway and Pacific Coast Highway, and public transit users. DAZZLE demonstrates that static painted walls and buildings can be transformed into large scale dynamic art that enhances our daily experience and inspires individual creativity.

E Ink Prism also turned heads at NeoCon in Chicago with interactive vignettes designed by BergmeyerGoldraySkyline Art Services and Zahner. From a pattern-changing dress to a color-changing room divider and elevator simulator, the various installations portrayed how E Ink Prism’s fully programmable capabilities can turn static materials and environments into dynamically changing objects and spaces. For the first time, E Ink also debuted segmented autonomous tiles with solar powered capabilities.
