Design Futures Council Announces 2015 Emerging Leaders
The Design Futures Council has named eight professionals as its Emerging Leaders for 2015. These individuals will receive registration scholarships to attend the 14th annual Leadership Summit on Sustainable Design in Dallas, Texas on October 11-13. The scholarship is sponsored by DuPont Building Innovations.
The Design Future Council’s annual Leadership Summit on Sustainable Design brings together a delegation of 100 people from the world’s most influential architecture, engineering and construction (A/E/C) firms, real estate companies, educators, and building product manufacturers to identify drivers of change, analyze emerging data, and explore innovation in sustainable design.
One of the Design Futures Council’s missions is to identify and recognize future leaders who are having-and will increasingly have-an impact on design practices, design professions, and the community. The Emerging Leaders scholarship program, now in its sixth year, addresses this goal by selecting individuals who represent the future of design practice in terms of its broadening scope, service to society, sustainable design, and technological innovation.
The 2015 Emerging Leaders:
Sam Bowling, a designer with Hanbury Evans Wright Vlattas + Co., has designed more than $20 million in LEED certified projects for government installations in Virginia and Maryland. He now leads several initiatives within HEWV that aim to create a comprehensive virtual framework for high-performance building design, as well as measures of the long-term viability of future projects.
Sam Brisendine co-founded Good Works Studio, a company that produces emergency flooring for refugee camps. Brisendine’s aptitude for advanced fabrication techniques led him to participate in the international Solar Decathlon 2007 as well as the exhibition of a shelter prototype at the International Disaster Conference and Expo in 2013, and teaching advanced fabrication software at Rice University’s School of Architecture.
Sarah Corbitt is an associate at LS3P in their Charleston, South Carolina office and serves as chair of the Green Core Competency Board. She has led firm efforts in using early-stage, conceptual energy analysis and daylighting tools.
Elizabeth Joyce is an engineer and energy consultant at Arup. Her diverse work includes building mechanical design, existing building performance improvement, and innovative energy program and policy development. Outside of Arup, Joyce volunteers with Engineers Without Borders in partnership with a community in rural Haiti.
Scott Key is the co-founder of Good Works Studio, a social enterprise company that produces hygienic emergency flooring from palettes used by relief organizations to ship goods into the field. He holds a graduate degree in architecture from Rice University.
Ariane Laxo is an interior designer at HGA who has design, research and sustainability expertise. She is past chairperson of USGBC’s Emerging Professionals National Committee. Laxo participated in the Climate Reality Leadership Corps in 2014, and has since led several climate change and resiliency workshops. She leads HGA’s resilient design task force, an interdisciplinary effort to develop climate resilience design strategies.
Vincent Martinez is the Director of Development and Operations for Architecture 2030 and is responsible for the organization’s day-to-day activities and many core initiatives. Martinez is the head of the Architecture 2030 Seattle office where he acts as interim director of the 2030 Districts Network for ten member cities. He serves as a founding board member of the Seattle 2030 District, and in collaboration with AIA Seattle, oversees the development and implementation of the AIA+2030 Professional Education Series.
Steve Moilanen has worked in the federal government, international organizations, and political campaigns, including the White House Office of Energy and Climate Change Policy. He is the co-founder and CEO of Solstice Initiative, a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing affordable solar energy access to communities nationwide. Moilanen has been selected as a Halcyon Fellow and Echoing Green Climate Fellow.
