Carnegie is pleased to release an inspirational and informative color trend statement titled “On the Contrary,” forecasting the particular hues, color combinations, and palette concepts that will drive design in 2018 and beyond.
The statement compiles the collective knowledge and experience gained through exposure to a wide range of materials, spaces, and emerging technologies as the company interacts with talented interior designers and architects to provide beautiful and functional textile solutions for a variety of interiors.
Having observed increased tendencies and preferences towards unexpected and unconventional color combinations, Carnegie names “On the Contrary” as the leading trend in color. Designers and clients are looking for a new boldness in how colors are used together, opting for combinations that bring just the right amount of visual tension and energy into a space without being exhausting.
While Carnegie predicts the “On the Contrary” trend will continue beyond 2018, as it permeates and evolves through many disciplines and industries, the company has identified four combinations forecasted to captivate in 2018:

Nearly Neutral: Soft, fashion-forward tones of extremely muted pinks and blues render neutral palettes more modern. Blush, Nude, and Ice Blue add slight nuance to Bright White, Eggshell, Camel, and Linen.

Pastels on Fire: A counter-intuitive blend of soft pastels with fire tones creates a powerful yet playful palette that evokes delight. True Red, Coral, and Canary Yellow pack a punch alongside Sky Blue, Turquoise, and Lavender.

Fall Meets Spring: Earthy colors and neutrals typically associated with either fall or spring seasons come together. Typically fall colors such as Hunter Green, Mustard, Charcoal and Bark are energized by Leaf Green, Heather Grey, and White.

Tailored Jewels: Overwhelmingly dark palettes evoke sophisticated glamour with a range of jewel tones anchored by black and shades of grey. Jewel tones from vibrant Aquamarine and Amethyst to rich Garnet and Ruby feel tailored in combination with dark neutrals.
Color reflects more than light, it reflects cultural changes and sociological shifts, evoking the emotion and the zeitgeist of our time. These new combinations are distinguished by an openness to new possibilities, as well as a willingness to break the rules of color studies, standing in opposition to the harmonious color stories set forth over centuries, since the inception of the first color rulebook, Sir Isaac Newton’s color wheel.
