Adding to an extensive career and résumé of accomplishments in architecture, design and planning, the prominent architect Michael C. Johnson AIA, NCARB, a founder and design principal of Carrier Johnson + CULTURE, has recently been selected for appointments to two high-profile organizations: the American Institute of Architects (AIA) Documents Committee and the University of California San Diego’s inaugural Real Estate and Development Advisory Board for its new degree program in that field. Based on his deep portfolio of projects across multiple market sectors, Johnson has been selected earlier this year to join the AIA Documents Committee, a national group that establishes standards across the profession.

A longstanding and prominent member of the AIA, Johnson has served on the group’s boards and as treasurer for its professional groups including the AIA California Council and for his local chapter. In consideration of his extensive experience in architectural practice in New Jersey, Wisconsin, District of Columbia, Virginia, Colorado and California, Johnson has been appointed to the AIA Documents Committee, “which comprises 35 dedicated men and women from diverse practices across the United States,” according to the AIA, the Washington, D.C.-based organization that has announced the post. “Experts in the fields of design, construction, law, and insurance, Committee members work to draft and revise AIA Contract Documents over voluntary 10-year terms.”

Members of the AIA Documents Committee meet quarterly and work together with AIA staff attorneys to draft and revise AIA contract documents to insure all are current and accurate, says Johnson. He adds that his current involvement includes updating and developing all interior architecture documents, reflecting his expertise in architecture, interior architectures, construction methods, building materials, and public safety and wellness.

In another regional appointment, Johnson has been named Chairman of the University of California San Diego’s inaugural Real Estate and Development Advisory Board for the school’s new Bachelor of Science (B.S.) degree in Real Estate and Development (RED). According to the University of California San Diego (UC San Diego), the new undergraduate academic program will commence in the fall of 2018, when it will debut as the first degree of its kind in the University of California system.

Reflecting Johnson’s active involvement in his home city of San Diego — including leadership of the AIA San Diego chapter and the San Diego Downtown Partnership, among many others — he has maintained a longstanding relationship with UC San Diego.

In this newly appointed role, Johnson collaborates with fellow board members, faculty, and staff to help shape the academic program’s vision and scope, curriculum, research, and special projects. Johnson will also provide guidance as needed to students and staff members, drawing from his professional and career knowledge. Other responsibilities include building partnerships on behalf of the Real Estate and Development program, hiring interns, mentoring students, and providing critical philanthropic support that will help the program to launch in the coming fall. According to UC San Diego, the advisory board members serve a one-year term that is renewable for a two-year term after the completion of their first.

This new post also reflects Johnson’s involvement in the real estate community as an architect, planner, volunteer and leader of varied initiatives, including his role as Chair of the Downtown San Diego Partnership in 2006, contributing to a vital and vibrant urban center that benefits the entire region. Working alongside leaders in real estate, planning and business, Johnson led the creation of a Work Force Housing Group, and he helped build consensus for a Downtown Community Plan that was adopted in 2006. In 2008, Johnson was honored with the group’s Founder’s Award, “in recognition of career-spanning visionary leadership in Downtown San Diego.”

With Carrier Johnson + CULTURE, Johnson leads a number of high-profile building projects including Park + Market, the 562,000-square-foot, mixed-used development in San Diego’s East Village created to house businesses, offices, and classrooms for a range of users including UC San Diego.

“As Chairman of this new board, I am eager and excited to begin working with the UC San Diego team and my colleagues on the inaugural Real Estate and Development Advisory Board,” says Johnson. “There is an increasing demand among students in studying and pursuing careers in real estate and development. Our work at Carrier Johnson + CULTURE will offer a valuable window into this professional world, and I am very happy to have been selected to support this new program.”
