AFHny Announces Details for 2nd Annual Day of Impact

2nd Annual Day of Impact Empowers Designers to get HandsOn in their Community
Eight sites and a diversity of design improvement projects make this year’s premier Archtober service day even more widereaching than the last

The details of 2015 Day of Impact were revealed by AFHny, previously the New York chapter of Architecture for Humanity. Undeterred by the closing of their former parent organization, AFHny continues to serve New York City’s local communities and will once again host Archtober’s premier volunteer event: Day of Impact.

“Many of today’s design professionals have a real interest in sharing their skills with underserved communities, but are unsure where to begin,” notes Adrielle Slaugh, the chapter’s Director of Membership. “Day of Impact intentionally welcomes new and seasoned volunteers alike.” To make this year’s service opportunities even more accessible, Slaugh and her team have increased the number of Day of Impact sites and expanded the number of volunteer spots by 25%. A major goal of this growth is to provide the city’s design professionals with greater opportunity to impact the specific communities in which they live or work.

Sites are being furnished by some of the region’s leading community-focused organizations. This year’s volunteers will work on painting, construction, gardening, and restoration projects alongside previous Day of Impact partners such as Rebuilding Together NYC, Publicolor, or New York Cares, or newcomers like Partnership for Parks, CITYarts, the LES Ecology Center, the Walt L Shamel Community Garden, or the New York Restoration Project.

Participants are welcome to sign up as individuals or in teams, as is the case for volunteers from VOA Associates, Spacesmith, Steelcase, TPG Architecture, and Rockwell Group. The contributions of these firms have been generously reinforced with support from Assa Abloy, CSI Metro NY, and Carvart.

2015 Day of Impact will be held on Saturday, October 17th. The night before, Bisazza will host a kick off celebration in their new Chelsea flagship store, with refreshments supplied by Benhar Office Interiors. Friday’s Night of Impact will bring together this year’s volunteers, Day of Impact’s partner organizations, and New York City’s pro bono design community in a toast to social impact across the boroughs.
