Versteel is celebrating ten years of The Maker Project, a collection shaped by the people who build it in the company’s Indiana-based facilities. What began in 2016 as an open-ended exploration of utility and function has grown into a defining part of the company’s portfolio: a collection grounded in American steel, driven by use, and refined over time.
Launched alongside Studio Steel®, a process that highlights the inherent beauty of welds and raw material, The Maker Project introduced a different way of approaching product development. Instead of beginning with a finished design and determining how to produce it, ideas were explored through making. Welders and fabricators on the shop floor at Versteel played a central role early in the process, shaping concepts through real materials, tools, and techniques rooted in American manufacturing. The collection was introduced as fully customizable and later evolved into a more defined standard offering, while still allowing for custom solutions.

Built Through Use
Over the past decade, The Maker Project has expanded steadily, with each addition reflecting a need uncovered through real-world use and informed by the hands-on knowledge of Versteel’s metalworkers.
The original introduction focused on foundational pieces, including tables, benches, and whiteboards. In 2017, the collection expanded to include a simple, round-seat stool, extending its utility into more active and flexible environments.
As the collection evolved, so did its range. In 2018, the introduction of Maker A tables and benches expanded the visual language of the collection. The angled frame brought a more architectural, modern expression while maintaining the strength and simplicity that define The Maker Project.
In 2019, a lighting concept developed through a student learning opportunity became part of the collection, offering a new perspective on how The Maker Project could expand while staying true to its origins. That same year, the collection received an Architizer A+ Award, recognizing its clarity of purpose and execution.
By 2022, the seating offering expanded again to include a sled base chair and coordinating stools with integrated butcher block seat and back, complementing the existing collection and supporting a broader range of applications.
A Defining Moment
A turning point for The Maker Project came in 2021 with the introduction of adjustable height tables. Available in motorized, pneumatic, and hand-crank options, the tables were designed to support a wide range of users and workstyles.
What began as a recurring custom request, particularly in libraries and universities, revealed a clear and growing need. As adjustable height tables were brought into the standard collection, they quickly gained traction across a variety of environments. Their success reinforced a core idea behind The Maker Project: that the most effective solutions come directly from how people work and learn.
Today, these tables represent a clear example of how The Maker Project continues to respond to real needs through thoughtful, practical design.
A Mark of Ten Years
To mark the milestone, Versteel has introduced a 10-year anniversary logo for The Maker Project.
The logo carries a straightforward, utilitarian character, taking cues from the materials and process that have defined The Maker Project from the beginning. There is a quiet familiarity in the forms, with a sense of structure that echoes steel and the built environment.
Much like the collection itself, the 10-year mark reflects an appreciation for making. It applauds the people behind the product, carrying a sense of honesty shaped by real materials and real use. It speaks to a way of working that values practicality, adaptability, and durability. It marks a decade of The Maker Project and the mindset that continues to shape what’s next.
