Materials solution company 3form announces the creation of a new Chief Creative Officer position, along with the promotion of Ryan Grey Smith into the role. Smith previously occupied leadership positions within LightArt, a lighting and acoustic fixtures company that Smith founded in 2005 and 3form acquired in 2008.

“I created this position to ensure 3form continues leading and inspiring our clients with materials and products that marry the needs of the environment, the physical space, and the human experience,” says 3form CEO, Wynn Clayton. “Ryan is an energizing team member who challenges all of us to see different perspectives and alternatives. We recognize his talent and contribution to LightArt—adding him into 3form rounds out a great design team.”

As 3formʼs new Chief Creative Officer, Smith will lead 3form, 3form Elements, and LightArtʼs design approach and innovation. He will collaborate with teams across the 3form companies to apply his insight to long-term product planning and overall design decisions.

He will also regularly contribute to the companyʼs sustainability mission, strategizing on Align—3formʼs comprehensive sustainability program of earth- and people-centric initiatives focused on the three main pillars of people, product, and planet. This year, he will help expand 3formʼs take-back program and spearhead the companyʼs JUST Label pursuit, equally prioritizing quality products and employee care.

Smith has been part of the design industry for more than 32 years as an architect and business owner, founding and selling two design-focused companies. After studying architecture at the University of Southern California and starting his architectural career with DMJM in Los Angeles, Smith became the architectural department leader for world-renowned glass artist Dale Chihuly. He later launched LightArt.

“3form has led the charge in material innovation,” says Smith, “and Iʼm motivated to stay at the forefront of sustainable and creative design in an industry that can have a meaningful impact on the natural and built environment.”
