3formʼs 2022 Color Collection Emulates the California Coastʼs Majestic Landscape

The material manufacturerʼs most tranquil color collection yet.

Award-winning materials manufacturer 3form proudly introduces their 2022 Color Collection, a palette of nine desaturated hues inspired by the California coastline.

Complete with mossy greens, deep blues, cool grays, and sandy golds, the colors evoke a sense of calm and serenity that only derives from nature. Just like the ever-evolving shades of our world, this new collection is a muted iteration of 3formʼs 2021 Color Collection, reflecting the need for grounded colors in shared spaces.

“As designers, we want to see things evolve,” says 3formʼs Vice President of Design, Christian Darby. “We had a clear starting point for this palette, but we didnʼt want to radically change it from previous years. Thereʼs a subtlety from where we went from 2021 to 2022. This palette is more refined by softening the greens and blues to become even more sophisticated.”

Darbyʼs inspiration for the 2022 Color Collection derives from his childhood home near Monterey Bay, a beach town in central California. Unique for its white-sand beaches, organic rock formations, and cypress trees, this palette distills Montereyʼs rolling hills, beaches, and lush foliage into nine distinct color identities. The palette also depicts the coastline in different seasons and weather conditions—as portrayed in soft blues and moody dark grays—to accommodate a variety of commercial interiors.

“One of the most beautiful things about the California coastline is the amazing blend of landscape, ocean, hills, mountains, and farmland,” says Darby. “Thereʼs a beautiful cross-section between the land and the stormy sea that we tried to emulate in this palette.”

Applicable on 3formʼs Varia, Chroma, and Glass platforms, the materials artfully play with light and translucency, bringing the color collection to life. Natural light shifts the hues throughout different times of day and casts subtle shadows in window-filled spaces. The 2022 Color Collectionʼs desaturated, sophisticated tones are also timelessly designed to reflect their durable material platformsʼ longevity.

Specifiable as partitions, wall accents, reception desk wraps, ceiling features, and more, the 2022 Color Collection is a natural addition to any commercial space.

“When we put together a color collection, we donʼt design with a particular environment in mind,” says Darby. “Instead, we think about whatʼs happening in color and design at large. Color spans so many environments and segments. This palette isnʼt just for healthcare, education, corporate, or hospitality. We want our commercial spaces to look and feel like home.”

As designers continue to capture the essence of nature in commercial environments, 3formʼs 2022 Color Collection appeals to the comfort we crave in shared spaces. When applied on 3formʼs Varia, Chroma, and Glass platforms, the 2022 Color Collection comes to life, integrating natural light with nature-inspired hues. This collection is also the precursor to 3formʼs upcoming 2022 collections, applying every material launch with this colorway.

3formʼs Varia, Chroma, and Glass platforms have certifications in Optimized EPD (SCS) and Greenguard Gold (UL), and Varia and Chroma have additional certifications in Type III EPD (SCS) and Red List Free Declare Label (ILFI). This aggressive pursuit of certifications and higher product standards is one example of the companyʼs comprehensive sustainability program, Align, in action. For decades, this sustainability program has represented 3formʼs commitment to empowering architects, designers, and consumers to make smart choices about how they buy and build.
