Top Trends at BDNY

Boutique Design New York (BDNY) returned to the Javits Center November 14-15 for its 11th edition. The leading trade fair for hospitality and lifestyle products featured the latest furniture, textiles, and flooring — for both indoor and outdoor settings.  Here’s a look at some of the trends we spotted at the show.

Outdoor Luxe

Sophisticated finishes and lush materials give the newest outdoor products a luxurious touch. Furniture, fabrics, and rugs can be used inside or out. Durable and easy to clean, these pieces blend form and function for every setting. Brown Jordan introduced the MOTO Collection. Designed by Ann Marie Vering, modern styling and neoclassical details pair beautifully. Crafted to provide maximum comfort, the cushions are composed of three layers of batting and high-end foam — unique for outdoor seating. The line consists of eleven versatile pieces that can be combined to create large or intimate sectionals, perfect for year-round entertaining.

Fil Doux Textiles presented the Outdoor Collection, marking the company’s first foray into the outdoor segment. The new line features two materials, solution-dyed acrylic and solution-dyed polyester. Both of these fabrics are known for superior durability, UV and water resistance, and color fastness. The fabrics are fashionable, yet are made to endure the challenges of a variety of exterior environments. With 11 patterns and 19 colors to choose from, the materials are suitable for hospitality and cruise markets.

Each piece of the Salita collection by Pavilion highlights tightly-tailored cushions supported by handcrafted, weather-resistant woven backs, integrated with a concealed metal framework — offered in a wide range of powder-coated finishes. The collection seamlessly blends soft forms, resulting in personalized, scaled seating solutions that can be used to create different layout possibilities suitable for residential and hospitality projects.

Set in Stone

Whether actual stone tabletops or materials capturing the sparkle of mineral formations, slab looks were everywhere. From tile to wallcoverings, cut rock striations and pebbled surfaces were popular. Kudos™ by Emser Tile is a beautiful stone-look porcelain. The variations and veining in cool grays, blues, and greens make each tile unique. This stylish tile is durable and easy to clean. From floor to wall, for both residential and commercial applications, the possibilities are endless for designers.

A Best of BDNY winner in the wallcoverings category, Strata by Innovations in Wallcoverings features soothing earth tones that allow the expansive pattern to blend with its environment. This specialty wallcovering’s fibrous substrate is a combination of cellulose, polyester and mica, which gives the surface its fine texture and subtle iridescence. When digitally printed, Strata’s linear pattern blurs on the surface, creating a watercolor brushstroke effect especially evident with blue colorways Moonstone and Carbon.

Mayer Fabrics presented Voyager. This upholstery fabric features a sophisticated pearlized leather look in a high-performance polyurethane polycarbonate construction with a silicone topcoat. The palette features metal and mineral colors such as zinc, gold, silver and bronze along with complex values of agate, emerald and turquoise. Soil and stain resistant, the material can be easily cleaned with bleach when needed. Voyager is a high-performance fabric ideal for designers working on healthcare, senior living, and education projects.

In Full Bloom

Embracing the beauty of nature, manufacturers showcased bright and bold floral patterns on flooring and wallcoverings, replacing the delicate buds of seasons past. Botanica Magna by Astek challenges the viewer to perceive the world from the ground up. Large-scale botanical murals created from the in-house designers’ imaginations, feature immersive environments of towering cacti, larger-than-life flowers, and exaggerated mushrooms, among other fantastical flora. These murals enliven hospitality settings with pops of green, purple, pink, and yellow tones.

A collaboration with artist Santi Moix, nanimarquina displayed the Flora collection. Santi Moix captures intricate details and the explosion of color found in a field of flowers. Each piece is made using a hand-tufted technique. Bloom is a collection of smaller models that extract the Promenade flowers as separate pieces and represent two moments in the life cycle of a flower, wilting and flowering. Bloom is designed to be combined with each other, as well as complement the Colors collection.

A Best of BDNY winner in the flooring category, the Postcard Collection from Tarkett Hospitality features designs created by the creative team during the pandemic. The group started mailing handcrafted postcards to each other as a way of keeping their connection strong since they were not together at the office. These miniature — and meaningful — works of art are celebrated in the line.  Designers can choose from a variety of fiber types, textures, colors, and pile weights. Styles can also be made into custom rugs to enhance guest rooms and lobbies, like the floral design seen here, in a mix of earthy brown, copper and rust hues.

 Home | Hospitality

The sophistication of hospitality blends with the comforts of home in the new furnishings that can be used in both commercial and residential environments. The sofa by Furniture Atelier  is inspired by the comfort and curves of a deep vintage couch. The base is finished in antique brass, with a panel wrapped in leather, and accent stitching that extends from end to end. A self welt that runs along the edge of the sofa adds a simple yet chic finishing touch.
