Contract magazine’s Best of NeoCon 2016 competition of contract furnishings products recognized 88 products by 56 companies in 42 categories. The honors included 41 Gold Awards, 38 Silver Awards, 10 Innovation Awards, and four Editors’ Choice Awards for a total of 94 awards including Best of Competition.
Teknion won Best of Competition with Zones, Gold Award winner in the Furniture Collections for Collaboration category and also Gold Award winner in Seating: Benches as well as Silver Award winner in Conference Room Furniture. Teknion also won Gold in Task/Desktop Lighting for Teknion Sanna by Pablo and in Technology-Integrated Solutions for Tek Pier, for a total of six awards – four Gold, one Silver, and Best of Competition.
Andreu World received seven awards – five Gold and two Silver. The Golds went to Ratio in Conference Room Furniture, Alya Chair in Conference Seating, Flex Lounge in Sofas & Lounge Seating, Duos in Seating: Stacking, and Reverse Lounge Tables in Occasional Tables; and the Silvers went to Flex S-Series in Bar Stools and Couvé Chair in Guest Seating.
Bernhardt Design won six awards: Gold for Laine in Bar Stools; Silver for Modern Family in Lounge Furniture Collections, Clue/Chance in Occasional Tables, and Anabela Chan Collection in Upholstery Textiles; an Innovation Award for Mellow in Sofas & Lounge Seating; and Editors’ Choice for studio: twenty-something in Furniture Collections for Collaboration.
Steelcase and subsidiary Designtex together received five awards – two Gold, one Silver, and two Innovation. The Golds were for Designtex Bespoke Surfaces in Surfacing Materials/Finishes and High Density Storage in Files & Mobile Storage Systems. The Silver was for Steelcase Workplace Advisor in Workplace Technologies, and the Innovation awards were for Bassline Tables in Occasional Tables and New Black Collection in Upholstery Textiles.
HNI Corp. subsidiaries won four awards. Gunlocke received a Gold in Guest Seating for Metta; Allsteel received a Silver in Case Goods for Approach; HBF won Editors’ Choice in Lounge Furniture Collections for Conexus; and HBF Textiles won Gold in Upholstery Textiles for the Christiane Müller Collection.
Tarkett won two Gold Awards and two Innovation Awards. Open Archive: Over Stitch and Moquette won Gold in Broadloom Carpet; Open Archive: GeoKnit and Cache Tweed received an Innovation Award in Modular Carpet; Collections Infinies won Gold in Hard-Surface Flooring; and Mesto Configuration got an Innovation Award in Healthcare Flooring.
Davis Furniture also won four awards – three Silvers and one Editors’ Choice. The Silvers were for Cloud in Conference Seating, Ginkgo Lounge Low Back in Sofas & Lounge Seating, and Techniq in Training & Work Tables. The Editors’ Choice was for Zen in Guest Seating.
Winners of three awards each included Carnegie (one Gold and two Silvers) and Shaw Contract (One Gold, one Silver, and one Editors’ Choice). Companies winning two awards each included Dekko, HALCON, Herman Miller, Inscape, Keilhauer, Knoll, Maars Living Walls, Mannington Commercial, MechoSystems and Vitra.
BEST OF COMPETITION WINNER
>Teknion: Zones, designed by Tom Lloyd and Luke Pearson of PearsonLloyd, is a comprehensive series of furniture products that address the needs for focus, collaborative and workshop areas within the office environment. The collection is comprised of seating, tables, screens, easels and semi-private enclosures, which can be used as either intimate collaborative settings or a place of retreat for privacy. In addition to furniture settings, Zones encompasses lighting and accessories.
The collection won the Best of NeoCon Gold Award in the Furniture Collections for Collaboration category. The Zones Bench also received a Gold Award in the Seating: Benches category, and Zones Tables won the Silver Award in Conference Room Furniture.
Zones addresses the growing importance of hospitality spaces as a new form of workplace. “We designed Zones to address change in the office landscape from the fixed and formal settings common today to the informal and flexible settings of the future,” said Mr. Lloyd.
Discussing the Zones collection, Mr. Pearson said, “The range is comprehensive and I think that’s very unusual. In fact I think it’s a problem in the market that people specify a particular thing to provide a solution, but often that solution is in isolation to the other solutions because they may have been designed at different times by different people for different clients and so on.
“Teknion offers a comprehensive systems line, and the products are extraordinarily linked and fluid. So we wanted to design something that would enter into the Teknion sphere doing something that would not jar that cohesiveness.
“The idea was to provide a series of elements, a collection of pieces that would support Teknion’s existing structures and then fill in the gaps. The thing is, the more we looked at that the bigger the range got and much to Teknion’s credit they committed to doing all of it.
“And so we have several chairs, a stool and a bench in the range, probably about 10 or 12 enclosure elements, two table ranges, a bunch of accessories and work tools, such as lighting, and then we have some sofas. Putting all these elements together you have, in their own right, a lot of objects that work by themselves; but when you bring them all together as a collection, you have an extraordinary array of possibilities for dealing with the open spaces created by the little nooks that are left because of the strange shape of the building. Or if a designer is starting from the ground up and actually planning the office from the perspective of creating more collaboration and meeting spaces, Zones provides a wealth of aesthetically cohesive and functionally related options.” (ED. Each piece is designed to be comfortable and familiar. PearsonLloyd used “timber” throughout because they wanted to create a welcoming set of spaces that allow a very dynamic work experience. Said Mr. Lloyd, “We’ve layered a critical understanding of work styles with a kind of craft expression that is practical but warm.”
In all, three different juries saw extraordinary merit in Zones. In addition to the Gold awarded in the Furniture Collections for Collaboration category, it won a Gold Best of NeoCon Award for Zones benches in the Seating category, and Zones tables won a Silver Award in the Conference Room Furniture category.
In addition to the Best of NeoCon and Best of Competition awards, Zones was a HiP Awards Honoree in the Workplace: Seating, Lounge, Collection category in Interior Design magazine’s annual recognition program. Zones was also presented a Metropolis Likes, which recognizes emerging design trends through the magazine’s social media-based award program.
