The Equation of YOU

Everyone’s past tells a story, and every future is a work in progress.  But what makes a good story?

These thoughts have been swirling in my head ever since I started a new role that feels both exciting and humbling: hosting the Imagine a Place Podcast. This podcast has long been a pioneer in our industry, with over 170 incredible stories shared across five years. It’s a rich archive of wisdom, humor, humanity, and heart.  I’m honored to carry on that legacy, but another thought comes to mind as I look to the future of Imagine a Place:

What meaningful stories can I contribute to a podcast that boasts such a vibrant history? What voices can I add to this thriving conversation?

Maria VanDeman

In discussions with friends, colleagues, and designers across the industry, one theme came through loud and clear: the desire to create real impact through our careers. Not just success.  Not just busyness. But meaning. If you know me, you know that people and purpose are at the center of everything I aspire to do. That’s exactly what I’m out to explore through the podcast.

As a professional navigating the beautiful chaos of raising two young kids, managing a fulfilling (and fast-paced) career, and striving to live with intention, I know I’m not alone.  A 23-year study of nearly 6,000 people, published in Psychology and Aging, found that while both life satisfaction and purpose contribute to longevity, purpose is a stronger predictor.  It’s a reminder of the power of having something to strive for—whether that’s family, career, or community.  I want to bring that same spirit of purpose to my time behind the mic.

I’ve always been fascinated by career paths—how people get where they are, the twists and turns, and what success truly means to them. My own journey has taken me from interior design to sales, then into communication and strategy.

Starting out as an interior designer gave me a deep respect for the craft and the magic that happens when spaces truly support people. Transitioning into sales, I learned that we’re all, in some way, salespeople who sell ideas, influence, designs, hopes, and dreams. Writing for Office Insight helped me rediscover the power of storytelling, a skill I hadn’t fully tapped into since college, and one I now use intentionally across every area of my work.

This idea of growing through diverse roles is a core theme in Mastery, by Robert Greene.  He writes, “The future belongs to those who learn more skills and combine them in creative ways.” In today’s world, mastery isn’t about honing a singular skill, but about blending multiple strengths and passions.  It’s about gaining perspective, tools, and embracing all the things that make you, you- and allowing yourself to shine.

If I had one piece of advice for professionals or students, it would be this: build your network and build your skills. Your version of “design + sales + storytelling” might look like “technology + empathy + business ownership”.  The magic happens when we bring our unique formulas and experiences to the table- and stay open to others, even if their path differs from ours.

What makes a person’s story unforgettable? What allows someone to leave a legacy beyond titles or timelines? What spark moves you?

I’ve found that our fellow human beings have an awful lot to teach us if we’re willing to listen.  And while you’re at that table, don’t be afraid to ask tough questions.  Don’t be afraid to stand up for an idea you truly believe in.  And don’t be afraid to do what you know is right.  When you have the good fortune to help someone else discover their path—do it. Encourage them to pursue their curiosities courageously.

Above all, do it even when you’re scared. Eleanor Roosevelt famously said, “Do one thing every day that scares you.”  So, take the leap, send the message, say ‘Yes’ to an opportunity that stretches and challenges you. That tinge of fear you feel is just a reminder that you’re on the right track.

I’m setting out to uncover those stories and formulas for success and impact one conversation at a time, with an open mind, open ears, and an open heart.  And yes, with a podcast mic in my face.

I hope you’ll join me in this next chapter of the Imagine a Place Podcast. But more than that, I hope you feel inspired to explore your own path—through the work you do, the people you love, and the purpose that lights your way.  If we’re going to spend so much of our lives working, let’s make it count.

Our stories are still unfolding, and I can’t wait to hear them.  Let’s imagine a place—together.
