In the rapidly evolving and fast-paced world, our changing lifestyles — driven by urbanization and rising lifestyle diseases, demand more from our built environments. This is especially true for office spaces, where individuals spend a significant portion of their day. The need for these spaces to be user-centric, promoting health and well-being, has never been more critical.

Design for Wellness
Wellness design is a holistic approach to built environments that prioritizes human health, making it foundational while designing modern offices. Designing with biophilia, a user-centric approach and sustainable practices elevates a space beyond its basic functions. It goes beyond buildings’ aesthetic appeal to create environments that support healthy lifestyles and enhance the overall experience. Studies have shown that employees working in environments with biophilic elements experience increased well-being and productivity. Exposure to nature within the workplace can reduce stress, improve mood and enhance cognitive function.
The benefits of wellness design are multifaceted, impacting physical health, mental well-being and environmental sustainability. Spaces designed with wellness can encourage physical activity and healthy living. Mental health is a critical component of overall well-being, which can be achieved by integrating natural light, quiet spaces and areas for relaxation and meditation. Eco-friendly materials, energy-efficient systems and sustainable construction practices contribute positively to the environment and the well-being of occupants.

Usana Office Space Redesign
The design for the office of Usana, a prominent healthcare brand, focuses on wellness design, creating a vibrant and efficient workspace that balances functionality with an uplifting atmosphere, reflecting a sophisticated approach to modern office design. Design for the Usana office space focuses on functionality, overall experience and well-being of those who inhabit the space. The aim was to redesign the space to better reflect its brand identity and operational needs.
The original design was inadequate, leading to a complete overhaul that followed Vastu principles (more about that later) and emphasized functional elegance and positivity. The process began with thoroughly analyzing Usana’s existing office spaces, focusing on color schemes and space utilization. This approach ensured the new design was Vastu compliant and incorporated bright, fresh elements as requested by the client.

A key feature of the revamped office is the entrance area, which is distinguished by its glass external facades. An innovative mild steel partition was introduced, serving dual purposes as a spatial separator and a product display. This design solution not only enhances the visual appeal of the office but also embodies the ethos of blending functionality with aesthetic sophistication.
Integrating Vastu Principles to Elevate Experiences
Vastu focuses on harmonizing the energies within a space to promote well-being and prosperity. By incorporating the principles of Vastu, one can transform their workspace from a mere physical space into a space of productivity, positive energy and personal well-being. The principles include orientation and placement of openings, entrances and furniture, using color schemes per the space’s purpose, and natural elements like plants, to name a few. Considering these principles as one aspect of a holistic approach to workplace design is essential, combining cultural influences with modern design principles to enhance the overall experience for individuals in the workspace.

The design for Usana’s office space acknowledges the spiritual dimension of well-being, often neglected in traditional office designs. A space that nurtures spiritual well-being can create a sense of peace and tranquillity, which is essential in today’s fast-paced world. The design incorporates soft, neutral colors and lighting to create a calming environment. The textures and materials used in the design are chosen to fit the brand identity while having a larger purpose of Vastu-compliant design.
A critical design consideration for any workspace is the psychological impact of colors and natural elements. Warm tones like reds, oranges and yellows stimulate energy and enthusiasm, ideal for active areas. Conversely, cooler tones like blues and greens offer calm and tranquillity, perfect for relaxation zones. Applying thoughtful color theory at Usana contributes to a positive workspace atmosphere. The design supports Usana’s brand image and enriches the employee experience by selecting colors that promote well-being and productivity.

Efficient Work Environment with Lighting
Lighting holds an influential role in workspaces, steering the overall mood of the environment. Incorporating natural light establishes a connection to the external surroundings, contributing to a refreshing atmosphere. Recognizing the psychological impact of lighting enables the creation of adaptable spaces that cater to the diverse needs of occupants. Thoughtful planning in layout and furniture arrangement ensures functionality and comfort, minimizing sensory overload through clear and uncluttered spaces. Strategic placement of furniture enhances flow and accessibility. Designating specific areas as quiet retreats with comfortable seating and calming elements provides dedicated spaces for decompression and recharging, further enhanced by sensory-friendly items like weighted blankets.
A well-organized and ergonomic workstation fosters efficiency, reducing distractions and enhancing focus. Comfortable seating and proper desk height contribute to physical well-being, while a clutter-free environment promotes a positive mindset. Ceiling designs can further dramatically impact the overall perception of space.

Workspace design, at its core, unfolds as a narrative that responds to the collective needs and habits of those spending their professional hours within its confines. In an era where the link between the physical workspace and employee well-being gains recognition, the understanding of human psychology takes a front seat in the design process. By grasping the fundamentals of human behavior, designers can craft work environments that resonate profoundly, optimizing efficiency and fostering a positive and harmonious professional experience.
