In the fall of 2018 ASID unveiled an awards program to promulgate the positive effects of great design on the users of completed projects and to celebrate examples of well-designed and well-researched projects. Based on their design solutions, occupant experiences, and post-occupancy research, notable projects and teams were selected for honors by a jury.
Speaking of the program, Gary Wheeler, CEO of ASID said. “The Outcome of Design Awards were devised to go beyond aesthetics and delve into the rich thought and strategies that make a project successful—projects that in fact achieve measurable outcomes. We hope that our project winners, honorees, and optimizers over the years demonstrate how design and the human experience are intertwined.”
In order to be designated a Winner, projects must show that People, Place and Planet are a part of the design solution and measure at least one of these criteria. The Little Charlotte Office, designed by Little Diversified Architectural Consulting has been named the 2022 Outcome of Design Winner.
Little’s national headquarters in Charlotte, NC is home to approximately 200 of its employees, and it’s where Little got its start. Located between the bustling Uptown and South End neighborhoods, the new headquarters is the first LEED- and WELL-Certified workspace in Charlotte.
The decision to move the Charlotte office Uptown symbolized more than just a simple change of address; it marked the firm’s role in raising the bar, ushering in a new era for both the community and the industry as a whole. The Little team focused on positive impacts for people and the planet, striving to improve the well-being of staff and the environment.
The architects utilized a highly flexible workplace kit-of-parts approach to provide a wide range of areas, from collaboration to heads-down spaces. They also created public spaces intended for events and activities to engage the local community. The 55,000-square-foot office provided the team with the opportunity to create their own working test lab that was the embodiment of their vision of the “workplace of the future.”
The goal of the project was to prove that employees are happier, healthier and more productive when they work in a space supportive of their physical and mental health. By creating a wide variety of work settings in the office, Little achieved a space that fosters employee health and wellness thanks to designing with employees’ needs in mind. Furthermore, the office embodies the vibrancy, connectivity and authenticity of its home city.
