The workplace has always reflected the nature of work itself. Today, as organizations move deeper into AI-driven models, that reflection is becoming sharper, more complex, and more demanding.
Designing a new workplace for Databricks in Amsterdam offered an opportunity to explore this shift in real terms. Not just how a space looks or functions, but why it exists and what it needs to enable for the people and ideas inside it.

At 13,000 square meters, the new workplace is significant in scale. But the real challenge was not size. It was creating an environment that could support a business defined by constant evolution: rapid growth, deep technical work, and a high degree of collaboration across disciplines and geographies.
This is where the next generation of workplace design begins.
For years, workplace thinking has centered on activity-based working: providing a variety of settings to support different tasks. That principle still holds but it is no longer sufficient on its own.

In AI led organizations, work is not just varied; it is layered. Engineers, product teams and client-facing roles operate simultaneously across different levels of intensity, abstraction and interaction. The workplace must respond to this complexity.
The question becomes less about what activities take place and more about what cognitive states need to be supported. Deep focus. Rapid iteration. Spontaneous collaboration. High-stakes client engagement. Each requires a different spatial response not just in terms of layout, but acoustics, adjacency, visibility and atmosphere.

One of the most important shifts in this project was recognizing that focus is no longer a default condition. It must be intentionally designed.
In highly technical environments, the ability to concentrate for sustained periods is critical. Yet these same organizations depend on continuous collaboration and knowledge-sharing. Balancing these needs requires more than simply separating quiet and collaborative zones. It demands a more nuanced approach to spatial planning.
In the Amsterdam workplace, this meant creating layers of focus environments ranging from fully enclosed, acoustically controlled spaces to semi-open areas that allow for concentration without complete isolation.
The goal is not to eliminate distraction entirely, but to give individuals control over their level of exposure. This sense of control is increasingly linked to both productivity and wellbeing.

Flexibility is often discussed in terms of furniture or layout. But in fast scaling organizations, it must operate at a deeper level. Teams expand, restructure and evolve. New functions emerge. Priorities shift. A workplace that cannot adapt to these changes quickly becomes obsolete.
For Databricks, flexibility was treated as a form of infrastructure embedded into the planning strategy from the outset. This includes modular spatial arrangements, adaptable meeting environments, and systems that allow spaces to be reconfigured with minimal disruption.
Importantly, this approach extends beyond workspace planning into the provision of amenities and support functions. Rather than sizing facilities for peak headcount alone, the workplace incorporates distributed solutions that allow it to flex in response to daily fluctuations. For example, while the central café is not designed to cater for the entire population at once, additional delivery and collection points are integrated across each floor to accommodate busier periods.

Similarly, wellness is treated as a scalable resource rather than a single destination. Multiple wellness spaces are distributed throughout the building, ensuring that as the organization grows, access to restorative environments remains consistent and inclusive.
Crucially, this approach supports not just change, but continuous change.
Rather than designing for a fixed headcount or organizational structure, the workplace is designed to absorb growth over time allowing the business to scale without losing coherence.
Another defining aspect of this project is the careful integration of client-facing environments within the overall workplace strategy. As businesses become more complex, so do the conversations they have with customers and partners. These interactions often involve technical demonstrations, collaborative problem-solving and strategic discussions.
In response, the workplace includes a fully dedicated client floor clearly defined and separate from the day-to-day working environments. This ensures that client engagement is both intentional and highly curated, while allowing employee workspaces to remain focused and uninterrupted.
Within this dedicated zone, spaces are designed not just for presentation, but for participation. They support different modes of interaction, formal and informal, structured and exploratory, enabling teams and clients to engage more effectively.
At the same time, these environments communicate a clear sense of identity. For Databricks, this meant creating spaces that reflect its position at the forefront of AI and data innovation, while remaining accessible and human in scale.
One of the ongoing challenges in workplace design for global organizations is balancing consistency with individuality. Employees and clients should recognize the brand experience across locations. Yet each workplace must also respond to its local context culturally, architecturally and socially.
In Amsterdam, this duality became an important driver of the design approach. The city is known for its openness, creativity and emphasis on community. These qualities informed the spatial language of the workplace encouraging transparency, movement and interaction.
At the same time, the design maintains alignment with Databricks’ broader identity, ensuring continuity across its international network. This balance is essential. It allows the workplace to feel both familiar and distinctive a place that belongs to the organization, but also to its location.
Growth brings opportunity, but it also creates challenges around culture and connection. As organizations expand, maintaining a sense of belonging becomes more difficult. New employees join at pace. Teams become more distributed. Informal networks are harder to sustain. The workplace plays a critical role in addressing this.
Social and shared spaces are not just amenities; they are essential infrastructure for building relationships and reinforcing culture. They provide opportunities for unplanned interaction the moments where knowledge is exchanged and connections are formed.
In this project, these spaces are integrated throughout the workplace rather than confined to specific areas. This helps to create a more fluid and inclusive environment, where interaction happens naturally as part of the working day.
The shift towards AI and data-driven business models is not just a technological change it is a human one. It changes how people work, how they collaborate, and what they need from their environment. Workplaces must evolve accordingly.
The design of the Databricks Amsterdam office is rooted in this understanding. It is not about creating a static solution, but about enabling an ongoing process of growth, adaptation and innovation.
At its core, the project asks a simple question: What kind of environment allows people and ideas to scale?
The answer is not singular. It is a balance. Between focus and collaboration. Between structure and flexibility. Between global identity and local character. Designing for these dualities is what defines the next generation of workplace thinking. And ultimately, it is what allows the workplace to move beyond a place of work and become a platform for progress.
